ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Gary speaks on helpful and relevant topics, both to lift the spirits of those who participate, and to bring substance to faith.  He is at home on college campuses, in churches, and with small or large groups or retreats, and he has helped many people throughout the United States and around the world to think more vibrantly about the Bible.  Among the many popular topics he has addressed are these:

  • Praying with Elation

  • Reading the Bible like Jesus

  • God Inspired Church Leadership

  • Effective Men and Women in Ministry

  • Praying with Power in the Midst of Distress

  • Coffee with Paul:  A Conversational Reading of the Bible

  • Reading the Bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls

  • Water from the Rock in a Desert Land

  • Divorce and the Christ Community

  • NT Greek as a Spiritual Discipline

  • and many other topics

Gary's speaking style is inviting, down to earth, energetic, and engaging.  Not only is he easy to listen to, he will challenge you to think.

Coffee with Paul is the result of God's grace, from start to finish.A Personal Comment:
"Whatever successes I have belong to God alone.  For, of all people, I am under obligation to God's grace.  Thankfully, I serve a perfect God who can do powerful things with failure and disappointment.  I am grateful for people like David, Peter, Paul, and the woman who washed Jesus' feet with her tears.  They all fell flat on their faces.  But they all took hold of God's outstretched hand, got up, and took one more step.  If I have any message for anyone anywhere, it is this:  No matter who you are, take hold of God's hand!  And ignore the people who try to hold you down."

Coffee with Paul:
A Conversational Approach to Scripture

This motivational presentation is the spark behind Coffee with Paul and is designed for a 1 or 2 hour time slot.

Praying Through Pain, Trouble, and Distress

This presentation is designed to have 4 lessons and is otherwise called, "A Contextual Approach to Prayer."  These lessons are based on a contextual reading of 1 Thessalonians and are presented to the context of everyday life in the 21st Century.  The lessons are as follows:

  1. What is Prayer, Anyway?

  2. Praying with Power

  3. Praying with Elation

  4. Praying Incessantly

These lessons can be delivered in a variety of formats, such as 1 each week, all four on a Saturday or Sunday, a Friday evening and Saturday morning, etc.

Unrelenting Faith
The Tireless Pursuit of God in the Midst of Distress

This is the signature offering by Coffee with Paul at the present time.  It is based in a contextual study of 1 Thessalonians and is a preview of what the completed CWP multi-volume series by the same title will be about.

Coffee with Paul is centrally about a faith that won't quit, no matter what. A faith that is unrelenting! There are usually 9 lessons in this series (although the number can be adjusted) and they can be brought in a variety of formats:   such as

  • 1 each week

  • 1 full weekend

  • two weekends

  • another arrangement

Here are all 9 lessons.

  1. A Divine Secret

  2. Dealing with Conflict

  3. Finding Direction

  4. Coping with Challenges

  5. Praying with Elation

  6. Walking the Talk

  7. Meeting the LORD

  8. Facing the Day

  9. Standing with Power

Reading the Bible Like Jesus and Paul

This innovative topic is designed for 13 lessons which are based on a contextual study of the Gospel of Matthew and on the writings of Paul.  Individual messages can also be pulled from the body of this approach.

The lessons develop a "models" approach.  This is accomplished by asking how Jesus read Scripture, how the Pharisees read Scripture, how Paul read Scripture, and how current-day readers read Scripture.  Comparing all of these is both instructive and compelling.

It took me a few days to get used to the idea I was having coffee with Paul. When it set in, I wanted more.

When I dove into this study I found that I very much enjoyed doing it. It is a fresh and new approach to a Bible devotion. I found the journaling to be rewarding and although it took me a few days to adjust to the idea that I was sharing a study with Paul, when it set in it left me wanting more. I look forward to continuing this study when it is available.

From the moment I first heard about Coffee with Paul, I was excited.  It offers something for everyone interested in the New Testament.  Whether you study the Bible at home by yourself or are a teacher of others, this approach is fantastic.  By training and profession I'm a teacher of the Bible and New Testament Greek, and everybody should take a serious look at this program.
